This pattern creates clean, elegant blooms that look beautiful on latkan for salwar kameez, but they’re just as lovely on gift wraps, hair accessories, home décor, bouquets, or craft projects.

Each flower has a crisp white petal, a bright yellow spadix, and a smooth green stem — a simple construction that gives a surprisingly polished finish. Whether you’re using scrap fabric or felt, the result is a lightweight, modern embellishment that instantly adds charm and colour.

​Materials

​

  • Any type of leftover fabric depending on how many flowers you want to make.

  • Matching thread

  • Sewing machine

  • Scissors or rotary cutter

  • Pins or clips

  • Fabric marker or chalk

Preparing the Pattern

  • Download or draft a the Calla Lily Pattern. You can scale it to your preferred size.
     

  • If using a PDF, print on 8.5"×11" paper to avoid taping pieces together. Make sure you have mirrored pieces for both the outer fabric and the lining. 

  • Each piece uses a ¼" seam allowance.

  • Scale the pattern up or down as you like — just keep pieces large enough to turn right‑side out.
    Cut all pieces, pin right sides together, and get them ready for sewing.

Cutting Your Fabric

  • Gather leftover or scrap fabric in three colours — traditionally white (petal), yellow (spadix), and green (leaf/stem).

  • Cut doubles of each pattern piece for every flower you plan to make. Example: For 6 flowers, cut 12 of each piece.

  • If using felt, single layers are enough since felt doesn’t fray.

Sew & Press

  • Sew around the entire edge of each piece, leaving a small opening at the bottom/stem for turning.

  • Trim excess seam allowance and clip curves/points so they turn smoothly.

  • Turn each piece right‑side out through the opening.

  • Use a point turner or chopstick to shape the tips.

  • Press everything flat for crisp, clean edges.
     

Assemble the Leaf

  • Take a piece of rope, string, or piping (ideally matching your green fabric).

  • Sew around the base of the leaf, attaching it to the rope.

  • Flip the leaf over the rope to hide the seam and create a smooth finish.
     

Build the Flower

  • Sew the yellow spadix to the end of the rope, just above the leaf.

  • Wrap the white petal around the spadix, hiding the seam as you go.

  • Overlap the petal edges so it curls naturally, then stitch to secure.

  • Fold the petal downward to form the classic calla lily funnel shape.

Final Touch

  • Shape the petal curl and adjust the leaf placement until it looks natural.

  • A little tweaking brings the whole flower to life. Clean, simple, and elegant.

Beginner Tips

  • Stick to 100% cotton for your first flower — it’s easier to cut and sew, especially around curves. 

  • Add interfacing if your fabric is soft, thin, or slippery. 

  • Sew slowly around curves; using the handwheel gives you more control. 

  • Cut off all excess allowances for a clean look.
